Jeffrey Tamayo, Assistant Producer - 01/17/06

My name is Jeff Tamayo, and I am an assistant producer here at High Moon Studios. My job is to assist producers with the development of new products. The majority of my time is spent helping other members of the team by resolving any impediments that are reported throughout the day. Impediments that halt or slow down productivity can be caused by a variety of things: Bugs in the development engine, hardware problems, or dependence on someone else's work. I keep a log of all these impediments which become my "to do list" for the day, and I make sure that I solve them as soon as I can. A lot of these impediments are reported in our daily "Scrum" meetings.

Scrum is part of Agile Methodology, a R&D management process that we have adopted here are High Moon Studios for our game development. With Scrum, each project team is divided into several smaller "feature" teams that focus on a particular game feature, for example A.I., player mechanics, and levels. At the daily Scrum meetings we discuss the tasks each team worked on the previous day, what tasks they are working on for that day, and if they have any issues or impediments. The Scrum meetings help the team communicate more effectively and allow progress to be monitored in a quick and easy fashion.

Also as part of Scrum, development time is divided into "sprints" that last either two or four weeks. At the end of a sprint, each feature team's work is presented to everyone in the studio, including senior managers who review progress. As part of Agile and Scrum game development, the aim is to develop a complete game element (what we call a "vertical slice") after every sprint. This allows us to evaluate the game a lot quicker than with traditional development, including "finding the fun" early on, and make course corrections sooner rather than later. We are always fine-tuning the process so that everyone at the studio is as productive as possible.

As part of my job here, you'll often find me running around the studio following up with team members and making sure that everything is going as smoothly as possible. When I'm not running around, I'm often involved in meetings discussing various aspects of product development. Chasing down impediments is a good workout in itself!

That pretty much sums up my daily duties here at High Moon Studios. I couldn't ask for a better working atmosphere. I truly enjoy working with others who share a common goal: To make great games!
